What Does Wind Storm Damage Look Like?

Windstorm damage to a roof can range from wind-lifted shingles that will not lay back down to complete removal of the roof covering. And a compromised roof covering can lead to water intrusion to the structure. High winds can also remove siding, knock down fences and trees, and turn loose objects into projectiles than can break windows and damage roofs.

What to Do After a Wind Storm.

Promptly notify your insurance company about the storm damage to your property. Preventing any storm damage from getting worse should also be a priority. This means temporarily repairing any areas of the roof that may be leaking by applying sealant, replacing missing shingles, or covering the compromised area(s) with a tarp. If your fence has fallen over, you may need to install temporary bracing so it can still perform its intended function. You can take photos to document the condition of the damaged area before and after repairs, particularly damaged materials that will be discarded. Be sure to save any and all repair receipts and invoices. If your home is unlivable because of the storm damage and your policy includes coverage for reasonable and necessary Additional Living Expense (ALE), you'll need to save your receipts for meals and hotel expenses.

Then, just be prepared to make the property available for any inspections and let your insurance company do its job. You should receive a written claim decision within about three weeks of the insurance adjuster's inspection. Feel free to request a re-inspection if you think covered damages were overlooked during the initial inspection. And if you have any questions or concerns about your insurance company's claim decision, do not hesitate to contact us and arrange a free consultation.
